About the Ireland Education System
Ireland’s education system has four levels, with government sponsorship.

Primary Education

Primary education in Ireland starts after age 4, with preschool usually private. The government provides free early childhood care. Schools have a child-centred curriculum and may exempt international students from Irish. They’re often run by religious groups but funded by the government for Irish and EU nationals.

Eligibility Criteria 

  • Pre-primary admission is based solely on the age limit.
  • Irish children are eligible at age 4 by August 31st.

Secondary Education

In the final 2 years, they select from three programs leading to State exams: Leaving Certificate, Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme, or Leaving Certificate Applied.

Post-primary education has two parts:

Junior Cycle (Ages 12-15):

  • Lasts for three years
  • Students take the Junior Certificate or Cycle Profile of Achievement

Senior Cycle (Ages 15+):

  • Lasts an additional 2-3 years after the junior cycle
  • Includes a Transition year for school instruction and work experience based on student preferences

Eligibility Criteria 

To enter post-primary schools in Ireland:

  • The child have age between 12 and 13 by January 1st.
  • All kids under 16 must attend.
Third-level Education (Higher Education)

Third-level education includes universities, technological institutions (TUs and ITs), and colleges of education, all primarily funded by the government. Additionally, there are independent private colleges. Universities offer bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate programs. Further Education
